This poster was created for the “Get Out the Vote” 2020 Poster Campaign Contest hosted by AIGA, the professional association for design. The objective of this contest was to increase voter engagement and commemorate the milestone of women’s suffrage by empowering women to vote.
In a moment of social turmoil, where the security of women’s rights seemed to be more precarious than in recent memory, I wanted to pivot to the good, and the unified. We can all find unity in our empowerment to vote, no matter whom we vote for. Therefore, in my design, I wanted to make all women, regardless of race, gender, age, etc. feel empowered to vote.
I wanted to incorporate many symbols of womanhood. The raised fists in solidarity are synonymous with fighting oppression, particularly popularized in the U.S. during the early 1960s by the black power movement, but universally applied to anyone experiencing injustice and oppression. I used vibrant colors not only because they are eye-catching, but also to make the movement universal, race-independent, and inclusive.
To further emphasize womanhood, I incorporated particular accents to solidify the concept of female-unity, such as symbols/imagery, nail culture, and tattoos. The inability to control our lives, and lose control of our lives are noted in those symbols. The nails, a symbol tied to the beauty industry and pressures of women to stay feminine, the tattoos, a symbol of our bodies being our choices, and the symbols of femininity all unify us. The tattoos also project a bit of a rebellious tone, which is also a conveyed point in the piece. In other words, I wanted to draw attention to gender roles, women’s rights and LGBT rights, and the strength of the matriarchy all while supporting and recognizing our history.
